Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) Regional Fish Ports (RFP) braved three tropical depressions and one super typhoon that entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility in August and delivered 48,096 metric tons (MT) of much-needed fish supply to all consumers nationwide.
The PFDA – General Santos Fish Port Complex (PFDA-GSFPC) recovered from last month’s dip after delivering 23,034.02 MT of fish, a 4.32% increase.
Meanwhile, as the fishing season reopens in the Davao Gulf, the PFDA – Davao Fish Port Complex (PFDA-DFPC) almost tripled its monthly unloading volume to 2,393.83 MT (193.89% increase).
Moreover, both the PFDA – Zamboanga Fish Port Complex (PFDA-ZFPC) and PFDA – Sual Fish Port (PFDA-SFP) gracefully recovered following last month’s slip. The ports unloaded 560.28 MT (12.8% increase) and 422.03 MT (36.25% increase), respectively.
In addition, the PFDA – Iloilo Fish Port Complex (PFDA-IFPC) also managed to recover from a previous slump despite heavy rains brought by several weather disturbances after recording 2,073.47 MT of fish, a 5.3% increase.
On the other hand, the PFDA – Navotas Fish Port Complex (PFDA-NFPC) suffered a setback in its monthly unloading volume due to severe weather conditions. Nevertheless, the Navotas port still managed to unload 16,702.629 MT, the second-highest volume for the month.
Considering the dangers posed by month-long strong winds and heavy rains to fishing vessels and port activities, the PFDA – Lucena Fish Port Complex (PFDA-LFPC) and the PFDA – Bulan Fish Port Complex (PFDA-BFPC) have both experienced a decline in their monthly unloading. However, the Luzon ports were able to deliver 2,162.88 MT and 746.87 MT of fish, respectively.

The Philippine Fisheries Development Authority enjoins the nation in celebrating the 59th Fish Conservation Week with the theme, “Pagkain ng Bansa Siguruhin, Likas Kayang Produksyon ng Isda Isulong Natin!”
By virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 316, the annual celebration of the Fish Conservation Week was transferred from the third week of October to the third week of September, alongside the declaration of the month of September as the Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month.
As the government-owned and controlled corporation (GOCC) attached to the Department of Agriculture, the PFDA is mandated to promote the development of the fishing industry through the provision of post-harvest infrastructure facilities and essential services that improve efficiency in the handling and distribution of fish and fishery products.
The PFDA shares the objective of the Fish Conservation Week in raising awareness on the need to conserve and protect the aquatic resources of the Philippines, and to promote its importance to the Filipino well-being and to the country’s economy.
Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA), in partnership with the University of the Philippines – Institute for Small-Scale Industries (UP-ISSI), conducted a Leadership and Management Training for personnel from the Central Office (CO) and Regional Fish Ports (RFP) holding senior level and supervisory positions, held on August 30 to 31, 2022 via teleconference.
The two-day activity which was organized by the PFDA Administrative Services Department – Human Resource Division (ASD-HRD) aims to enhance the target participants’ skills in developing and motivating their subordinates and to equip them with the ability to define the responsibilities and authority of each member of management at all levels.
Ms. Crispina “Inday” B. Almonte of the UP-ISSI served as the resource speaker for the leadership training. Some of the main topics discussed by Ms. Almonte were Understanding Management Functions and Manager’s Roles, Leadership vs Management, and Leadership roles.
In addition, Ms. Inday also focused on the participants’ Competence and Skills and the Decision-making capabilities of Supervisors.
At the end of the two-day program, the participants were expected to further appreciate and apply leadership and managerial principles and realize the necessary competencies of effective leaders and managers for the achievement of organizational objectives.
Twenty-five personnel across all CO offices and RFP units actively participated in the two-day leadership and management workshop.

Some 344 employees from the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority – Navotas Fish Port Complex (PFDA-NFPC) and Central Office received their first and second doses of COVID-19 booster shots during a two-day vaccination drive at the PFDA Gender and Development Center on August 5 and 19, 2022.
The PFDA-NFPC partnered with the Navotas City Health Office to conduct the two-day COVID-19 booster vaccination initiatives. Aside from PFDA employees who are part of the A2 (senior citizens) and A3 (people with comorbidities) priority group, the vaccination drive was also directed to those who are part of the A4 (economic frontliners) priority group.
On August 5, a total of 182 people received their first and second booster shots, while a total of 162 people received their first and second booster shots on August 19.
Among those who received their COVID-19 booster shots were PFDA-NFPC port clients and utility and security personnel.
The PFDA-NFPC expressed their utmost appreciation to Navotas City Mayor John Rey Tiangco, Dr. Christia Padolina and Dr. Yeng Felipe of the Navotas City Health Office, and all the health workers and volunteers during the two-day activity for making this vaccination drive possible.

Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) Regional Fish Ports (RFP) delivered 56,032.87 metric tons (MT) of fishery products to all their consumers nationwide amid the unpredictable downpour of moderate to heavy rains throughout the month of July 2022.
Based on the PFDA Modified Integrated Corporate Reporting System (MICRS), the PFDA – Davao Fish Port Complex (PFDA) exhibited the most significant increase in monthly catch among all ports despite the still implemented closed fishing season in Davao Gulf. Data showed that the Davao port unloaded 814.53 MT of fish, a 132.39% increase compared to last month’s unloading.
Meanwhile, the PFDA – Navotas Fish Port Complex (PFDA-NFPC) maintained an increasing trend in its monthly unloading volume. This July, the port delivered the highest volume of fish among all the ports at 27,016.58 MT (53.39% increase).
Also maintaining its upward movement for four consecutive months is the PFDA – Lucena Fish Port Complex (PFDA-LFPC) after netting 2,380.99 MT of fish (4.40% increase).
On the other hand, the PFDA – General Santos Fish Port Complex (PFDA-GSFPC) may have stumbled a bit this month, but the port still managed to deliver a significant amount of 22,080.18 MT of fish.
Due to scattered rainfalls, the PFDA – Iloilo Fish Port Complex (PFDA-IFPC) and the PFDA – Bulan Fish Port Complex (PFDA-BFPC) have both experienced a slip in their monthly unloading record. Nevertheless, the ports provided 1,969.10 MT and 965.02 MT of fish to consumers, respectively.
The PFDA – Zamboanga Fish Port Complex (PFDA-ZFPC) and the PFDA – Sual Fish Port (PFDA-SFP) have both stumbled a bit this July due to intermittent heavy rains all over the country. Still, the ports delivered 496.72 MT and 309.75 MT, respectively.

#NagkakaisangPFDA: PFDA marks 46 years of assisting Filipino fisherfolk
Philippine Fisheries Development Authority celebrated its 46th anniversary with the theme “Nagkakaisang PFDA tungo sa Mas Pinalakas na Sektor ng Pangisdaan”, held at the Philippine Coconut Authority Auditorium and via livestream on August 11, 2022.
Before the main anniversary program, the PFDA Central Office (CO) and Regional Fish Ports (RFPs) held a simultaneous Thanksgiving Mass that was followed by the blessing of the newly renovated CO building.
The program began with the premier of the PFDA Corporate Video 2022 that showcased the agency’s flagship infrastructure and rehabilitation projects and the isDA ON THE GO program. The corporate video also featured messages of appreciation and well-wishes from clients and stakeholders nationwide.
Office-in-Charge General Manager (OICGM) Ms. Iris R. de Vera thanked everyone who attended today’s live program physically and via livestream. She said that 46 years is such a great achievement for the agency and there will still be challenges ahead, but the PFDA must deliver and work together to effectively perform the agency’s mandate and achieve its vision of providing better service to its stakeholders and support the Department of Agriculture’s goal of making food available and affordable to the consuming public.
“Over the years, the PFDA remains committed and strong for a unified purpose of supporting the fishing industry by developing, operating, and managing sound and sustainable post-harvest facilities. With our continuous and united effort to perform and undertake our responsibilities, we are proud of our agency’s performance and [we] had risen to the challenges in the agency’s operation. Let us work together and strive harder to achieve more milestones towards a stronger fisheries industry and food-resilient Philippines.” OICGM de Vera said.
OICGM de Vera also sent her deepest gratitude to former PFDA General Manager Atty. Glen A. Pangapalan for his good stewardship and for being a team player in propelling PFDA to perform well.
Afterwards, the PFDA recognized the extensive service and commitment of its Service Loyalty Awardees in the Central Office and RFPs who contributed a significant amount of time assisting the Filipino fisherfolk.
Department of Agriculture Undersecretary for Agri-Industrialization Mr. Rodolfo Vicerra and Atty. Therese Gutierrez of the National Food Authority graced the 46th Anniversary Program. Subsequently, Usec. Vicerra met with the PFDA Top Management for a quick meeting.
Ms. Camille An Moog of the Operations Services Department and Ms. Ma. Arlyn Andagao of the Corporate Planning and MIS Department hosted this year's anniversary program.

Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) kicks off the week-long celebration of its 46th Anniversary with the theme “Nagkakaisang PFDA Tungo sa Mas Pinalakas na Sektor ng Pangisdaan” on August 8, 2022.
Officer-in-Charge General Manager (OICGM) Ms. Iris R. de Vera welcomed everyone who attended the program which was in conjunction with the return of the agency’s weekly flag raising ceremony.
“Ngayong araw ay isang pagdiriwang ng isang matagumpay na anibersaryo ng ating ahensya… For the past two years, naramdaman natin ang takot dahil sa banta ng COVID-19 pandemic, but in spite of that, naging matatag tayo at tinupad natin ang ating tungkulin sa pagtulong sa sektor ng pangisdaan. Binuksan natin ang ating ahensya at nagpatuloy tayo magbigay ng serbisyo para makatulong tayo sa sektor at masiguro ang suplay ng isda sa merkado… Kung tayo ay sama-sama, nagkakaisa, at nagtutulungan, walang imposible. Kaya nating gawin ang lahat,” OICGM de Vera said.
OICGM de Vera thanked everyone in the PFDA Central Office and Regional Fish Ports for their dedication and hard work. She hopes for constant unity within the agency to continue its objective of assisting the fisheries sector.
Meanwhile, Mr. Miguel M. Pilarta, Subcommittee on Programs and Production Head, presented the activity for the week, highlighting the main program on August 11 which will be held simultaneously at the PCA Auditorium and via livestream.
Lastly, as Mr. Mc Christian Julius A. Macaranas II, Anniversary Committee Head and Public Information Division Chief closed the program, he said that this event is significantly memorable because the agency is finally doing a blended (physical and livestream) anniversary celebration following the restrictions brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. Mr. Macaranas said that he is hopeful that the agency will eventually go back in full swing, armed with more knowledge and a better perspective in life.
After the program, all staff and personnel from the PFDA Central Office enjoyed all the food and games during the back-to-school-themed anniversary kickoff celebration.
