In a bid to further intensify information campaigns on COVID-19 protocols and vaccination concerns, Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) conducted a one-day webinar via the PFDA Facebook page entitled "Bakuna Kontra Corona: A Webinar on COVID-19 Vaccine Misinformation and Hesitancy" on May 26, 2021.
For the third episode of the PFDA Bulletin organized by the Public Information Division (PID) and Human Resource Division – Administrative Services Department (HRD-ASD), the agency aims to promote a positive outlook and professionally address the stigma surrounding COVID-19 vaccination.
Global Filipino Network host and book author Mr. Marcelino Russell Catan shared his knowledge about the COVID-19 virus and the importance of vaccines through the eyes of a survivor and with the help of recent studies about the virus.
With the help of recent studies, Mr. Catan discussed the signs and symptoms of COVID-19, important steps to stay safe, and necessary measures to take if you are infected by the virus. In addition, Mr. Catan talked about the development, emergency use authorization, and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines.
"Ang pinakamabisang bakuna ay ang ituturok sa braso natin. Kung ano po ang nandiyan ay tanggapin na po natin dahil hindi po natin iyan ikamamatay o ikaka-ospital. Huwag po tayong magpakalat ng fake news. Sana po ay positive ang kaisipan natin dahil kayang kaya po nating labanan ang pandemya na ito," Mr. Catan explained.
Subsequently, PFDA Medical Officer Dr. Maritoni Jane Catan answered and clarified several questions and uncertainties surrounding COVID-19 vaccination from online viewers and the registration form.
"Gawin natin ang kung ano ang pwede nating gawin. Sa bayanihan tayo magtatagumpay. The vaccines are important, but the Lord is our protector and healer," Dr. Catan said.
PFDA-Central Office and Regional Fish Port personnel and clients attended the online discussion about the importance of being vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus.
Mr. Mc Christian Julius A. Macaranas II from PID and Ms. Mary Anne Kristine R. Ramos from HRD-ASD served as the moderators for the said activity.
If you missed the live stream video, you could still watch the replay of the webinar by visiting the PFDA Facebook page or by searching #PFDABulletinCOVIDVaccine.

PFDA-NFPC marks another week of high fish unloading volume
As Metro Manila and four nearby provinces shift to GCQ with heightened restrictions, Philippine Fisheries Development – Navotas Fish Port Complex (PFDA-NFPC) marked another week of high fish unloading during the May 17-23, 2021 period.
According to a PFDA Regional Fish Ports (RFPs) monitoring report by the Operations Services Department (OSD), PFDA-NFPC has recorded 4,000.79 metric tons (MT) of fish supply readily available for its clients and stakeholders in the Metro and selected areas in Luzon.
In addition, records showed that this volume is the highest volume unloaded by the port in May.
Galunggong (fresh) maintained its position as the number one fish species with the highest supply, followed by bangus, sardines, tilapia, and shellfish.
With less stringent COVID-19 restrictions in place, PFDA-NFPC will continue its collective effort to maintain a high volume of unloaded fish products until the end of the month to surpass last quarter’s unloading record.

Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA), a government instrumentality with corporate powers attached to the Department of Agriculture, registered significant growth in operating income year-on-year in 2020 despite the economic challenges brought by the emergence of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic early in the year.
The agency closed the year 2020 with an operating income of P198.05 million, a 9.32 percent increase from P181.16 million in 2019.
On the other hand, its Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization (EBIDTA) climbed by 14.5 percent to P265.2 million in 2020 from P231.4 million in 2019. This record successfully surpassed the Governance Commission for GOCCs (GCG)-approved EBIDTA target of P143 million.
Based on the record, the PFDA’s FY 2020 total assets increased by 37.34 percent, equivalent to P4.7 billion, easily outperforming 2019’s P3.4 billion.
PFDA showed that it remained financially fit in providing public service amid the severe socioeconomic impacts caused by COVID-19. Throughout one of the most challenging years in history, the agency persevered to promote and develop the fishing industry, as well as contribute to the nation’s food security.
Starting the new year strong, PFDA already reached a P71.65 million operating income during the first quarter of 2021, surpassing half of last year’s total.
As the economy recovers from the pandemic, the agency is confident and eager to maintain this upward trend in the succeeding years.

After braving moderate to rough seas caused by Tropical Storm Crising, Philippine Fisheries Development Authority – Zamboanga Fish Port Complex (PFDA-ZFPC) and PFDA – Davao Fish Port Complex (PFDA-DFPC) have unloaded their highest volume record for May.
During the May 14-20, 2021 period, PFDA-ZFPC delivered 219.12 metric tons (MT) of fish, an 83.10% increase compared to last week’s unloading volume. Based on a centralized fish unloading report by the PFDA RFPs, Operations Services Department (OSD), and Public Information Division (PID), this is the port’s highest record despite harsh weather conditions brought by Crising in most parts of Mindanao over the weekend.
For PFDA-ZFPC, matambaka (fresh) had the highest volume equivalent to 88.99 MT. Also, making it into the top common species with the highest availability record for the week are galunggong (39.63 MT), sardines (21.68 MT), mackerel (14.89 MT), and squid (13.39 MT).
On the other hand, PFDA-DFPC also hit its highest unloading record this week. As Davao Region takes the brunt of Crising, PFDA-DFPC made every effort to unload a total of 63.11 MT of fishery products for those affected by the tropical storm.
Most of the fishery products delivered by PFDA-DFPC are frozen tuna products and swordfish.
In the weeks to come, the two Mindanao RFPs aim to maintain the positive increase as Crising travels further away from the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

GSFPC continues to provide enough fishery products to consumers. Philippine Fisheries Development Authority – General Santos Fish Port Complex (PFDA-GSFPC) has unloaded 4,943.69 metric tons (MT) of fish for its clients and stakeholders, withstanding the damages brought by Tropical Storm Crising during the May 14-20, 2021 period. |
According to a centralized fish unloading report collated by PFDA RFPs, Operations Services Department (OSD), and Public Information Division (PID), PFDA-GSFPC managed to unload a significant volume of fish supply despite the recent onslaught of Crising in Mindanao where most of the port’s major fishing grounds are located.
In addition, the report also showed that PFDA-GSFPC sustained an adequate volume of fish for buyers, suppliers, and traders, regardless of thorough disinfection activities against the spread of COVID-19 virus every Sunday, which affects fish unloading and other port activities.
Skipjack tuna (frozen) remains on the top list with the highest unloading tally at 2,519.62 MT. The list includes skipjack tuna (gulyasan), bisugo, galunggong, and yellowfin tuna (tambakol/bariles), completing the top five common species with the highest availability record.
As the port recovers from the counterproductive effects of the tropical storm, PFDA-GSFPC has set on its ways to provide enough fishery products for its consumers.
