As a member of the Department of Agriculture (DA) Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on the clean-up, Rehabilitation and Preservation of Manila Bay, PFDA has joined with other government agencies, local government unit, non-government organization, academes and other cause-oriented groups for the launching of Manila Bay Rehabilitation. The main objective is to increase awareness and encourage support from the public to clean and rehabilitate Manila Bay and transform its water quality fit for swimming or Class SB standard. The event was spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in compliance to the directives of President Duterte to rehabilitate the Manila Bay. Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) officials and senior staff participated in the 1st NATIONAL GALUNGGONG SUMMIT which was organized by the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) on January 24 and 25, 2019 with the theme “Producksyon ng Galunggong na Isda ng Masa, Paunlarin Gamit ang Siyensya”. The two-day summit gathered key stakeholders of the galunggong fisheries supply chain, fisherfolk representatives, concerned national government agencies, local government units, non-government organizations and science experts.
The summit aims to generate inputs for the creation of a five-year science-based National Management Plan for Galunggong and likewise address the critical issues on the declining catch and production of galunggong and its related species.
Galunggong is one of the country’s economically-important fish species, and is one of the major target species in the Philippine fisheries sector. The industry alone generates livelihood and income to thousands of fishermen and a source of affordable fish protein for millions of Filipinos.
Relatively, the DA-BFAR had already initiated measures to counter and prevent galunggong stocks from further falling off, by enacting conservation measures through the establishment of closed seasons for galunggong and small pelagic species in Northeastern Palawan from November 01 to January 31, and in Davao Gulf from June 01 to August 31 every year.
Likewise, the attendance of the PFDA staff to the Galunggong Summit will enable the agency to effectively take part in the overall strategy to ensure sustained supply of Galunggong, focusing on further improving post-harvest handling that aims to reduce spoilage while at the same time providing support to science-based strategies that will ensure growth and sustained stocks of the species.

Four (4) Regional Fish Port Complexes of the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA), namely: the Navotas Fish Port Complex (NFPC), General Santos Fish Port Complex (GSFPC), Davao Fish Port Complex (DFPC) and Iloilo Fish Port Complex (IFPC) are now ISO 9001:2015 Certified.

With the ISO 9001:2015 on the four (4) RFPCs, they can now effectively demonstrate their respective capacity to provide quality business processes, strong customer focus, leadership and decision-making, and continual improvement. The Philippine Fisheries Development Authority, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture (DA), together with the DA Bureaus and attached agencies and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, celebrated this year’s World Food Day last October 16, 2018 with the theme; “OUR ACTIONS ARE OUR FUTURE. A #ZERO HUNGER WORLD BY 2030 IS POSSIBLE”. The celebration was held at the Quezon City Circle. Fifty participants from the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) Central Office and the Navotas Fish Port Complex (NFPC) attended the event with Mr. Rhandall Patrick D. Ancheta as PFDA’s flag bearer. |

The WFD program was graced by Secretary Emmanuel F. Piñol of the Department of Agriculture, Ms. Lotta Sylwander, United Nations (UN) World Food Programme Philippines Representative and Country Director; Mr. Jose Luis Fernandez Representative in the Philippines of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and USEC Evelyn G. Laviña who is the Chairperson of the Philippine 2018 WFD Celebration. Notably, said celebration supports the FAO’s mission to raise awareness and action for sectors suffering from hunger and the need to ensure food security and understanding of the approaches that would help end world hunger. Capping the event was a candle-lighting ceremony participated by the employees of the DA family, FAO, and other agencies who altogether made the WFD pledge underscoring their commitment to take part in the projects and efforts towards ending world hunger. |

“In nature, light creates the color. In the picture, color creates the light” - Hans Hofmann This year’s Tuna Festival centered on the Mardi Gras backdrop aimed to create light and color. Like the Mardi Gras, the Festival was celebrated with lively and colorful decors as well as breathtaking parade of costumes in float and streetdancing. The vibrant colors and textures of Mardi Gras illustrated the vivid colors of the ocean and its marine life as the theme of this year’s Tuna Festival pays tribute to the diversity of ocean and the richness of its fauna and flora. This year’s Tuna Festival was symbolic as it celebrated the 50th cityhood year of Gensan; it was a grand and glorious celebration of the city emerging victorious despite the many challenges it faced. The city is envisioned to be Metro Gensan with the focused development of its emerging urban centers and the exponential growth of its commercial and industrial estates. |

Also, this year’s Tuna Festival likewise celebrated the economic milestones of the city and its industries. It showcased the solidarity of the Generals towards a common goal, their festiveness in celebrating shared victories and their hospitality in embracing tourists, migrants and investors to the city. The highlight of the Festival was from September 1-5 with the much anticipated Parade of Floats kicking off the official opening. The city was filled with colors, lights and the energetic vibe of the spectators was heartfelt; the Generals gathered along the streets to witness the parade. The Opening Ceremony was graced with the local officials, other important guests including Taiwanese Ambassador Michael Hsu. The keynote speaker, USEC Art Boncato, Jr. represented DOT Secretary Bernadette Romulo Puyat cited the tourism potentials of the Region and outline the Department’s tourism agenda and ongoing initiatives. |

Other main events are the FishFest sa Fish Port which is on its 17th Year, the 3rd Sugbahan sa Dalan, Tunafest Bancarera, Mr. & Ms. Tourism and the Festival closer, the TunaFest Mardi Gras Streetdancing Competition. The Tunafest Bancarera jumped start the final day of the highlight activities with the Strteetdancing Competion in the afternoon followed by the Closing Ceremony. Mayor Ronnel Rivera delivered his message of thanks to the organizers and the men and women behind the Tuna Festival for supporting the Festival amid security challenges. He especially thanked the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority who have been the LGU’s partner in organizing the Tuna Festival since 2012. | The Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) through its officers and employees joined the 2018 International Coastal Clean Up (ICC) held at the Navotas Fish Port Complex (NFPC) on September 22, 2018. The PFDA’s Regional Ports namely: Davao Fish Port Complex, General Santos Fish Port Complex, Zambaonga Fish Port Complex, Iloilo Fish Port Complex and Lucena Fish Port Complex also participated in the said event. ICC is a yearly activity and is participated by more than 9 million volunteers from more than 100 countries whose objective is to bring environmental awareness, cleanliness and conservation of oceans through the removal of trash/debris from the beach, shorelines, waterways and seas. The PFDA celebrated its 42nd founding anniversary last August 09, 2018, with this year’s theme “Fishtahan sa Pondohan”. The anniversary celebration was held at the Market Hall 1 of the Navotas Fish Port Complex (NFPC) and spearheaded by PFDA General Manger, Atty. Glen A. Pangapalan and PFDA Assistant General Manager Atty. Loralie C. Datahan. The celebration was held two days before the actual foundation date, August 11, which falls on a Saturday.
The festivities were graced by the presence of Hon. Christopher Bong Go, Special Assistant to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, as the keynote speaker, PFDA Clients/Stakeholders, Port Managers of PFDA’s regional fish ports and PFDA employees. In his message SAP Go emphasized that “The President’s Priority Projects (Infrastructure Flagship Projects) includes the PFDA’s upgrading/rehabilitation of Navotas Fish Port Complex (NFPC) which was included in the 2019 National Expenditure Program and it will be implemented from 2019 to 2023”. He also added that “this project will help the PFDA achieve effective and sustainable post-harvest facilities and infrastructure, contributing to enhanced competitiveness in the fisheries sector”.
