In line with continuous efforts of the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority to contribute to more sustainable fishing practices, the PFDA – Davao Fish Port Complex recently welcomed the first tuna unloading using handline fishing technique, July 8, 2020.
Tuna handline fishing is done using smaller and traditional fishing boats. Fishers also use single hooks that catch tuna individually.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), tuna handline fishing creates less impact on the marine environment since it is done through a highly selective method of targeting and catching large and mature tuna which already produced eggs.
Similar to most fish species, egg production depends on age and size of the fish. A 5 year-old female fish can produce an average of five million eggs per year, while those aged 15-20 years old can produce up to 45 million eggs.
Atty. Glen A. Pangapalan, PFDA General Manager and Mr. Albert P. Aguinaldo, DFPC Port Manager, attended the unloading activity.
Aside from the PFDA officers, the activity was also joined by Mr. Domingo O. Ang, Davao Marina Tuna Ventures, Inc. Chief Executive Officer, along with the prospect clients like processors, institutional buyers and exporters.

The PFDA - Lucena Fish Port Complex (LFPC) supported the official turnover of two units of motorized fiberglass fishing boats and two units of fish aggregating device (payao) from the Quezon Provincial Office to the fisherfolk members of the Samahan ng mga Bisaya sa Dalahican (SABIDA), June 26, 2020.
LFPC Port Manager Custodio Balaoing joined Third District Representative Aleta Suarez, Second District Representative David “Jay-Jay” Suarez, and Alona Partylist Representative Anna Villaraza Suarez, official representatives of Governor Danilo E. Suarez,, during the turn-over ceremony.
The provision of these fishing equipment is expected to increase the livelihood opportunities among the local fisherfolks of Lucena amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event was coordinated by the local government of Quezon through the Harbor and Market Operations Division (HMOD) and Port Maintenance and Refrigeration Division (PMRD) of PFDA-LFPC.

With more employees physically reporting to work upon placing the National Capital Region (NCR) under General Community Quarantine (GCQ), the PFDA would like to remind everyone to observe proper health protocols to keep the agency coronavirus-free.
This includes observing at least 1-meter social physical distance, regular washing of hands, and use of face masks on and off the office premises.

The PFDA Central Office also conducted disinfection activities as part of the standard protocols against the spread of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), responsible for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), June 26, 2020.
The activity was led by the General Services Division under the Administrative Services Department (GSD-ASD).
The PFDA – Navotas Fish Port Complex (NFPC) also supported the event.
Aside from the regular disinfection activities, PFDA Central Office and all Regional Fish Ports (RFPs) strictly maintain and enforce prevention protocols as follows: compliance with ID and passes upon entry; thermal scanning; provision of alcohol, sanitizer, and face mask for employees; observance of physical distancing; and footbath and hand washing stations for all incoming clients at various strategic locations. As part of the continuous efforts to provide seamless tasks collaboration and unhampered services among PFDA units and personnel amid the COVID-19 pandemic and limitations brought by community quarantine, the PFDA workforce acquired Online Google Suite End User’s Training from the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), June 24, 2020.
The PFDA in-house training is led by the Information Technology Division under the Corporate Planning and Management Information Services Department (ITD-CPMISD). Mr. Michael Yu, from Kollab and DICT, served as the resource person and moderator.
It is participated by 59 personnel from the PFDA Central Office and nine (9) Regional Fish Ports – Bulan, Camaligan, Davao, General Santos, Iloilo, Lucena, Navotas, Sual, and Zamboanga.
The GSuite Training includes lectures on the use of various Google products like Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Meet, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, Sites and Tasks. These products aid the use of business email, online file storage, shared calendars, and video meetings, particularly useful during alternative work arrangements like shifting schedules and working from home.
According to DICT website, the training covers all government offices with Government-wide Email System (GovMail) accounts.
GovMail is the official email service for government agencies which provides data integrity in electronic communications and transactions. It is also one of the projects of the DICT towards achieving a digital government under the Digital Philippines initiative, according to DICT website.

The Philippine Fisheries Development Authority - Navotas Fish Port Complex (PFDA-NFPC) conducted its 3rd monthly general cleaning and disinfection activities last June 6 and 7, 2020 as a preventive measure against the coronavirus.
The event was participated by various NFPC units, port clients, local government units, and other agencies.
Among the organizations that supported the activity were PNP-Maritime, Navotas-CDRRMO, Barangays NBBN at NBBS, Irma Fishing and Trading Inc., Chanidae Fish Trader, United Navotas Fish Port Small Scale Fish Traders, Fish Workers and Fisherfolks Association Inc., Team Bos Ben, CN Elite Fire and Rescue Volunteer, Delta Fire Volunteer, 911 S&RT, LSERV Corporation (janitorial services), and Catalina Security Agency.
Further, the 911 Search and Rescue Team (911 S&RT), a Korean volunteer group, also joined the event and donated environment-safe liquid disinfectant.
The general cleaning and disinfection activities covered various NFPC facilities including main roads, Gate 2 (Market 1 & 2 compound), quayside, and Market Hall 1-5. It also covered Pier 1 (Reblocking Area), Lambatan Area, BGA/Nena Compound, Sagingan Area at Market 3 ISF Area.
Engr. Miguel B. Lamberte Jr., former NFPC Port Manager and now Acting Assistant General Manager, graced the event to discuss his environmental advocacies in line with the Philippine Environment Month. Lamberte also awarded a Certificate of Appreciation to the 911 S&RT for their participation and donation.
The monthly disinfection activity is part of the programs organized by the NFPC-Food Safety and Environmental Management Unit (NFPC-FSEMU) as part of the health measures against COVID-19.

Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar visited the Lucena Fish Port Complex (LFPC), one of the Regional Fish Ports (RFPs) under the management of Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA), June 20, 2020 .
Sec. Andanar is also joined by PCOO Undersecretary George Apacible and Regional Director Maria Cristina Arzadon, Philippine Information Agency (PIA) - Region IV- A.
LFPC Port Manager Custodio Balaoing welcomed the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) team and discussed various port activities like fish unloading and marketing.
Sec. Andanar also visited the on-going port expansion and rehabilitation project at the LFPC, one of the flagship projects under the Duterte Administration.

The Philippine Fisheries Development Authority joins the Bureau of Soils and Water Management in the annual observance of Soil Conservation Month this June.
This year’s theme, “Soil Conservation: Sustainable Food, Feed, and Fibre Production" is aligned to the observance of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)'s Desertification and Drought Day on June 17, 2020 which runs under the slogan "Food. Feed. Fibre. Sustainable production and consumption."
This is to promote the conservation, development and management of soil and water as important resources for sustainable agricultural development. (Public Information Division)
