Remaining true to its mandate of promoting the development of the fishing industry, Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) met with several local government units (LGU) across the country to discuss the establishment of new fisheries post-harvest facilities in their respective cities and municipalities, held on June 23-25 and 30, 2021 via teleconference.
Tagum City, Davao del Norte and Mati City, Davao Oriental
On June 23, Tagum City Mayor Hon. Allan L. Rellon attended the meeting with PFDA General Manager Atty. Glen A. Pangapalan where they talked about the construction of Tagum City Modern Fish Market.
According to GM Pangapalan, this project is the first-ever project to be implemented by the PFDA, patterned in the modern fish trade market of Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. In addition, the General Manager noted that the agency opted to pilot Tagum City due to identified surplus and demand for fish and fishery products in the area.
Subsequently, Mayor Rellon said that the memorandum agreement between the two organizations will be immediately reviewed and endorse the same to the sanggunian for the passage of the resolution and immediate commencement of the project.
Later in the day, PFDA also met with Mati City LGU representatives to review the project construction of Mati Fish Port. The project component for the city includes reclamation, causeway, market hall, administration building, guardhouse, power and water utilities, and drainage system.
During the meeting, Technical Services Department (TSD) Manager, Engr. Danilo A. Axalan assured the Mati City LGU that the PFDA will assist them on their application for the Environmental Clearance along with other technical details in presenting the same to the local DENR.
Both projects for Tagum City and Mati City will be included in the procurement activities this July.
Baler, Aurora and Salcedo, Eastern Samar
Meanwhile, on June 24, the agency convened with Baler LGU to talk about the construction of the Baler Fish Port and Ice Plant and Cold Storage (IPCS) facility in the municipality. During the meeting, it was agreed that the LGU will submit a letter, specifying their additional comments, requests, and/or proposals on the specification of the project.
On the same day, PFDA arranged a meeting with Salcedo LGU to discuss the construction of the Salcedo Fish Port. This development project includes upgrading and improvement of the existing causeway and access road, construction of a new causeway, market hall and admin office, comfort room, guardhouse, power and water utilities, and drainage system.
During the dialogue, Salcedo Mayor Hon. Atty. Melchor L. Mergal expressed his appreciation of the project and said that it will be fully supported by the LGU.
Procurement activities for both Baler LGU and Salcedo LGU are also scheduled starting this month.
Cabugao, Ilocos Sur
On June 25, the agency met with representatives from Cabugao LGU to discuss the construction of the Cabugao Ice Plant. So far, the planned construction is still waiting for the final location, but it already has completed its Detail Engineering. This infrastructure project includes the construction of a 5-metric ton ice plant and cold storage, power and water utilities, drainage system, and site development.
Malalag, Davao Del Sur
Finally, PFDA linked up with Malalag LGU to talk about the construction of Malalag Fish Port. The project includes reclamation or site development, trading hall, drainage, sewerage system, outside water distribution system, and outside power distribution system. During the meeting, Acting Assistant General Manager Ms. Iris R. de Vera that PFDA assured Malalag LGU that the agency will assist them with the reportorial requirements and will furnish the LGU with the template to ease the LGU with the weight of the report.
The PFDA will be reviewing more fisheries post-harvest facilities with other LGUs across the country in the coming days.
